Is there a way to put your own comments into non-database objects such as reporting services reports or SSIS packages?

for SSRS reports, I take the comment from this element in the RDL:

<Report Description="put comment here" ... >
...
</Report>

You should be able to set that value in BIDS when you are designing your report.

Also you can do it from the SSRS web interface if you click on the "properties" tab for a given report. If you do that, you should see a textbox to add a description for the report. SqlSpec will pick up that description when it runs. To get to the SSRS web interface, go to http://yourserver/reports in a browser.

For SSIS packages, I take the package-level comment from Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.PackageInfo.Description, which is described here:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.sqlserver.dts.runtime.packageinfo.description.aspx

This also should be something you can set in BIDS.
