Hi All,

I've been tasked to develop a data dictionary for an IBM DB2 Mainframe Database with over 1000 tables. My questions are:

1. Can SqlSpec handle such a big DB?
2. Is anybody currently using SqlSpec for an IBM DB2 DB?
3. What are the requirements to use SqlSpec with a MF IBM DB2 DB?
4. How does one connect to the Mainframe?

I need these questions answered before I continue to evaluate SqlSpec because I will need to present it to management as a viable tool to develop the data dictionary.

Thanks in advance,

Luis

>> Can SqlSpec handle such a big DB?

yes. It's been used to document databases larger than this, with more than 10k tables.

>> Is anybody currently using SqlSpec for an IBM DB2 DB?

yes. in fact, IBM itself bought a license from me.

>> What are the requirements to use SqlSpec with a MF IBM DB2 DB?

there are 3 options here:

1. use DB2.NET to connect. In this case, you need to have a copy of IBM.Data.DB2.dll in the same directory as SqlSpec.exe. You can get DB2.NET here: http://www-01.ibm.com/software/data/db2/ad/dotnet.html

2. use OLEDB to connect. In this case, you need to have an OLEDB provider for DB2 installed on computer where SqlSpec.exe is running. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16978 - search for DB2 on that page.

3. use ODBC to connect. In this case, you need to have an ODBC provider for DB2 installed on computer where SqlSpec.exe is running. http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21418043

Note that I do not have access to a mainframe so I have not tested any of these scenarios. I can do my best to help you if you have problems though. I have only tested SqlSpec for DB2 running on windows.

>> How does one connect to the Mainframe?

using one of the 3 options above.
